Today's verse: Lk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Ronnie recently passed away. When I saw the calm face in the coffin, the above Words of Jesus rang in my ears. To Ronnie too in death, these Words were as fresh as they were to the thief hanging on the right side of Jesus.
Like many youngsters Ronnie was a fun loving guy. He had friends and they had friends and all these friends met on weekends and had a gala time. The crux of the party was to raise the bar, whether in smoking a cigarette peppered with drugs or inserting a needle into your vein in the most painful manner or for that matter, doing the most innovative things with the woman you took with you for the revelry. And so life went on when suddenly one fine day Ronnie coughed and as he spat in the sink, he saw blood. This happened many times in the next few days. A visit to the doctor and a battery of tests later, Ronnie learnt that his death warrant was signed. He had contracted Tuberculosis and this was because he was HIV +ve.
Within no time Ronnie lost considerable weight and the medicines had a completely opposite effect. He noticed that people shunned him, even his family. Months later, he was just skin and bones and on a government hospital bed. He was left to die. Imagine, a guy just 24, flying high in his career, moving around with the best, wearing the best clothes, dining at the best hotels…now on a bug infested bed in a dinghy room with the hospital clothes, smelling of vomit!
Ronnie cursed the day, he began on the journey that brought him here. But there was no turning back. He suffered. But what could he do. One day a man came to visit him and spoke to him of Jesus. Jesus? Ronnie hated the name. See what Jesus had done to him. He abused the man. But this man was unfazed. He left but not before handing a Bible to Ronnie. Ronnie flung it on the table. But as evening was turning into night, Ronnie took it in his hand and even as he did God’s Grace smiled on him.
Gradually, as life seeped out of Ronnie, the Words of the Bible percolated into him. He actually envisioned Jesus reaching out to the sinners. He saw himself among them at the party Levi threw for Jesus. Each of the people there were sinners on the one side. On the other there were the Jews who would not even touch them. Then Jesus came over and Ronnie could not believe his eyes, Jesus shook hands with them and hugged them. Ronnie could feel the warmth of His touch and the love in His eyes. Ronnie wept and wept – with joy.
On that day in the morning, Ronnie told Jesus. Lord, I know you have set me free; but Lord, You have to accept me as I am, in this condition…And he sensed the Lord telling Him, I accept you as you are and today you will be with Me in Paradise. A glow descended on Ronnie’s face. Even, as he ascended into the waiting arms of the Lord.
At his funeral, hypocritical tribute was paid to him, but he hardly cared. The One who loved him and died for him, now embraced him and held him close. That’s all that mattered to him.
Have you felt the whiff of cool air as it brings in much needed showers on a hot summer afternoon? Have you tasted a small bit of bread after hours and days of not having had anything? Have you experienced the satisfaction of an intense need being met? My friend, Jesus Christ can give you this satisfaction and much more. Now is the time to bring Him into your life. Just say, 'Lord Jesus, I believe in you. Come into my life right now. Heal my sin. Heal everything.'

Today's verse: 1 Cor. 15:34. for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Knowing God is the most essential aspect of man because man’s spirit is tied up with God in a manner that it yearns to be with Him. It’s like a little child who doesn’t want to leave his mother or the person who has been with it all the time. But we fallen creatures are hardly concerned. I say this of me because I know how much I yearn to be with God. Literally nothing… The only saving grace in my life is that I reserve some time for God, which is exclusively His and to the extent possible, I try to abide by it with His Grace. Now, because we do not have and seek not His knowledge, we are involved with all kind of atrocious and evil things and finally die in misery.
I know of many people who have died failed lives when they could well have passed away in peace and victory. This mind you, are those who profess to be Christian and may I say, lead the Christian life! There are some of us who tell me, ‘Why do you need all this? When we were small, our parents and others taught us a few prayers. These prayers are good, our lives are blessed and we are extremely happy. So, why change now?’
This is a question many may have in their lives and to understand this, let’s look at Abraham. Wasn’t he satisfied when he was in Chaldea or had moved to Haran? He could have well asked God the same question. He didn’t know that God wanted to raise him as His own and make him the father of nations. It was achieved only when Abraham agreed to hearken to God’s call. Knowledge of God means spending time with God and meditating upon Him. When we do this, He is pleased and then the big thing that He intended to give us, of which we have no idea, becomes possible and real in our lives.

Today's verse: Acts: 11:14. Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
What is so blessed about the Word of God that it saves? Saves us from the punishments that await us as a result of our wanton sinning and disbelieving Him who created us.
God’s Word is packed with power to relieve us of the burden that we carry. It saves us from the misery that the world heaps upon us and that the evil one torments us with. It is the eternal Word that removes this burden the moment you speak it with belief.
Most of us Christians live in the world, trapped in some kind of torment. His Word comes setting us free. It frees us from the shackles that our mind, which is the fertile ground for the devil to sow hate, discord, fear, etc. if left without the fence of God’s protection through His Word, harbors and weakens our lives.
God’s Word is fresh each morning as each morning brings things anew. God’s Word is permanent and comes to us without any cost or labor. It enriches our soul and gives us strength in the midst of weakness. Above all, remember, heaven and earth will wither and pass away but His Word will remain for He Himself is His Word!

Today's verse: 1 Cor. 2:12. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
A Christian must always bear in mind the gift that has been received in becoming a believer first and then a follower of Jesus Christ. First of all, we receive the Spirit of God. That in itself is a big gift; for everything that comes to us, comes through the Holy Spirit: Might, Power and even the ability to cry ‘Jesus Christ’ come through the Holy Spirit and our very lives are a breath of the Spirit.
And in our verse today, we are told that through this Spirit, we come to know the things that are freely given to us of God. The first thing is our salvation, which has been secured by the death of our beloved Lord on the cross. It has ensured that we will enjoy eternal life with our Father in His Kingdom.
We must also remember that life itself is of God. And in this world life is all. There can be nothing greater than life and it is only given by Him. No human being can give us even a second more than God has sent our way. Then again, His Grace, which comes to us unworthy people, is sufficient to wreck the miseries the evil one sends us and brings about victory.
Apart from these great gifts, we also have received liberty in Christ and we are free to live in the Christly life, which was referred to as ‘The Way’ by the early Christians. We have also received the confidence of living a good Christian life. Because when we believe that our Father is with us and supplies us all we need, we will never lack. A kind of comfort sets in whenever despair knocks and when we are doubtful except of course if we doubt Him. If you know this then realize, that it is the Spirit which enlightens you and it is the Spirit who will lead you.

Today's verse: Mt. 9:12. But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Continuing on the theme of mercy that our Lord has for us, it is astounding to learn that He Himself came down to show us the tenets of His mercy and His love. In the above verse, Jesus reflects the same idea. And He gives justification in using a metaphor, that of a sick person needing a doctor. But merciful and kind that He is, He doesn’t mention that here, He Himself comes to the patient even when the patient doesn’t seem to want Him!
What is amazing is that in the context of sin and sinners, Jesus justifies His being with sinners as He says; it is for them that He has come. People ridicule Him for mixing around with them but He defends them. Very unlike us, who brand people as sinners and then refrain from having anything to do with them. We also develop stories of them and like to mention these stories, maligning the subject of the stories even more.
Our world is very different from Jesus’ world. It is in His world where there is an abundance of mercy and love. In that world, the sinner is not looked upon as someone filthy, but as someone who can be washed clean. In that world is beauty untold and anyone is welcome who can accept forgiveness and repent. Into this world today, is our Lord leading us. Are we ready to walk with Him or are we asking Him to come again another day?

Today's verse: Zec. 2:8. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
When you think of the mercy of the Lord, you can’t but imagine how magnificently magnanimous the Lord is when it comes to compassion. And believe you me; there can never be one as great as the Lord in this aspect even though you find Him being tough with His people when you read of the time before Christ in the Bible. We know that the Israelites sinned against the Lord and continued their wanton debauchery. Name a sin and they did it. They thought God was with them – a fact – and therefore they thought even if they did wicked things, God would be with them and help them fight their enemies. They used God as a rag. Wipe when needed and then throw away!
God did fight their enemies but at the same time, God was upset. His heart ached in sorrow. The principles of justice He had created demanded they be punished. Therefore, He sent the prophets who warned them about the coming wrath; but they just ridiculed them and ignored their message. They even had the gall to punish them. Then He sent the punishment due to them in the form of pagan nations who plundered and set them to the sword and misery.
But the Lord God, when He saw their pain, yet remembered the promises He had made to Moses, Abraham, David and the people of His heart. He yearned to hold the Israelites as a shepherd would; a tender lamb, but they put Him away. He felt pain when they were pained. He wanted to rescue them but how could He when they had rejected Him? And so they suffered but when it was done, He remembered them and the very people, who He had used to punish the Israelites, became the recipients of His ire. He abhorred them for they had touched the ‘apple of His eye’. Imagine this, what a term for a miserable people, a generation of blabbers and people of moral decay!
That however, my friend is the God we serve and, we are His people, the sheep of His flock. Won’t He come to our aid too when our enemies form rank against us. Some day we too will sing like David, ‘He has set a table for us, before our enemies…’

Today's verse: 1 Tim. 4:4,5. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
There are times in life when we seek some assurance on whether the notions about things we hold in our minds, are valid. For e.g. some people perceive strange things on a full moon night and they are rather enchanted and scared about it. Thus, the full moon becomes an enigma and clarification is expected. Then there are others who treat certain foods as cursed of God and therefore not worthy of eating, etc. So doubts arise and unless clarified, cause unnecessary strain on the mind.
In reading the above verse, we understand that ‘everything’ God created is good. Notwithstanding the idiosyncrasies man has developed of things of the world, evolving practices and beliefs that evoke fear and nausea; the universe is God’s and all that is therein, which mind you are His creation. Therefore, it is good. Consequently, if we hold that God has created everything, then we must also hold that it is good and has no evil per se in it. Unless in our belief systems, we hold a certain thing to be evil in nature which because of our beliefs comes into existence in our minds and takes form. This is something we need to shed believing firmly that whatever we see around us is good, as God has created it.
As to foods and other elements that concern our sustenance, we must note the same principle applies. Jesus said ‘Everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile…’ Mk. 18,19. Paul just applies a small rider here saying ‘if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again so that I may not cause my brother to sin’ 1Cor. 8:13. So therefore, all foods are clean.
As to any irrational belief you may have my friend, please hold on to what the Bible says. It is God’s pleasure that we enjoy of the bounty He gives us and everything on earth is to benefit us. So please do not hold onto anything with an irrational belief causing yourself or your brother harm in any way.

Today's verse: Ps. 73:25. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Living a life with the Lord can have the best of beauty laid on your path, for the Lord is beautiful. In the Psalm from which today’s verse is taken, there is a broad band of emotions that the psalmist expresses. First of all there is a feeling of futility of having kept the decrees of the Lord, particularly, when seeing those who haven’t and yet prosper and are in good health. Eventually, the psalmist realizes his fault and understands the goodness of the Lord.
His mouth shapes the above verse and we see that it is beautiful. Imagine the depth of the words. What a beautiful sentiment of the deep passion in the heart that the Lord ignites. Imagine the complete change in the human being from envying the unrighteous to that of loving God for His work. How much is the understanding of the psalmist to God’s justice and benevolence.
Could we appropriate this same attitude in our lives? We might have not been proper in our attitude with God. But rather than drift away, could we approach His sanctuary? Could we learn of that beauty of His which has touched the toughest souls and transformed them? Then someday, we could also declare to Him, ‘Whom do I have but You Lord and none gives me more pleasure on earth than You.’

Today's verse: Acts 2:28. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' (NIV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
In the above verse we find a profound declaration of a person in deep relationship with God. Of a person who has learnt the ways of God and revels in following them for he knows they are profitable. This is also a one who enjoys God’s presence and is joyful in it. It is David who says it and we know how close David was with God and the wonderful things God did in his life.
But for you and me, how important are knowledge of knowing the paths of life set out by God. Do we travel in them regularly? Are we conversant with them? Are we happy about them and lead others in traveling those paths? I know that walking on the straight paths of God daily, is a daunting task, for our carnal nature is in rebellion with God’s ways and usurps all our good intentions. But then again, we cannot go along with God by our own strength but only by His Grace and His strength. Are we tuned to this?
As to His presence, have we experienced the glorious presence of God? We cannot behold it because of our flesh and sinful nature but we can feel His presence as if it were real when we seek Him with all our hearts. God’s presence is sublime and an ocean of peace and joy. In His presence, nothing negative remains. Everything is transformed to purity and a sense of possibility, no matter the extent of difficulty. His presence can be in the godown or in the palace or anywhere. It particularly loves a heart desperate for communion with Him. In His presence, the soul of man can rejoice in limitless happiness and be lifted to sing like the angels in heaven.

Today's verse: 1 Sam. 9:16. …for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
In the picture of God in the bible, we can see, after love, the greatest, is His compassion and mercy. It is but fitting to Praise God for His love but even more for His mercy. For love keeps room for justice, but mercy provides an escape route. Justice demands its due from the Maker, Who has instated justice as the equilibrium between good and bad. For when the bad steals and becomes heavy on the scale, justice takes over and brings about balance. Justice demanded death for us humans for that was the norm and it needed to be met; but the Lamb of God met that demand Himself and shielded us.
In the background of a continued saga of defiance by the Israelites toward God, in their wanton acts of idol worship and practice of every kind of immorality, including the audacity of asking Samuel the prophet to seek a king from God who would rule over them, God was terribly hurt. Imagine His own people rejecting Him openly in idol worship and also rejecting His Kingship in seeking an earthly king. Yet, in the above verse we see the merciful heart of God concerned about His people when they turn back.
My friend, there is much to know about God’s mercy. Look for a while in your mind’s eye and see Jesus on the cross, struggling to breathe and writhing in pain. Then see Him look up to the Father and say, ‘Forgive them for they know not what they do.’ Perhaps then the greatness of God’s mercy will be etched on your heart enabling you to be in turn, merciful. Let’s pray for each other that this awesome Grace come to us today and remain with us.

Today's verse: Nu. 11:21. And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
We are so much a part of the world where impossibility and lack reign that we just refuse to believe in the majestic, all possible, filling and awesome power of God. We might have witnessed miracles galore in the past. We would have even had God speaking to us; yet our human nature is such that when faced with a block, we question God and say, ‘Oh, this block looks so big, I don’t think you can move it.’ Why only we, Moses, a man who had witnessed the amazing power of God at close quarters had the above poser to God!
That’s why Jesus said, ‘The Spirit wills, but the flesh is weak.’ And it is this, which pulls us down. So many times God has been with us and we know it; yet, come the very next problem and we doubt God. Our prayer to Him often is, ‘Lord, last time You helped me. This time, I don’t know whether You will!’ Now tell me, how can you expect an answer to your prayer. The other amazing thing is when people tell me, ‘brother, I don’t know how to pray, you pray for me!!!’
My friend, God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He changeth not. His mercies are fresh each morning and His love is constant. His comfort is warm as ever and His hand to stretch forth and give is yet the same. Are we willing to take Him at His promise and keep faith that come what may, we will look only into those eyes when tossed by the billows of life?

Today's verse: Eccl. 11:5. Just as you know not how the breath of life fashions the human frame in the mother’s womb, so you know not the work of God, which He is accomplishing in the universe. (NAB)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
There are times when the mind wants to think that men are superior to God. I recently read a statement by a famous atheist, ‘Man’s emotions are bigger than God.’ Besides, when I read blogs of atheists or pseudo atheists, I can see there is a lot of intellectual fare. Eventually the onus is on the believer to prove that God exists.
It is a clever ploy because those who question God’s existence are sharp enough to know God will not stoop to prove His existence; He doesn’t need to, though God does prove it in a few cases I have read of, when the purpose was great. So they win the argument and the believer bows out. I’d like to say that, for anyone to first learn about God and appreciate Him, it is better to see His work in the universe rather than asking Him to make an appearance. Look at the earth, the sun, the moon, etc., they go about their tasks year after year in the same manner without deviation – isn’t it God, orchestrating their order? How else can you explain their going about their routines with nothing to guide them on? We humans cannot make a ball go round without it getting off its orbit within seconds. So who is the brain behind this? Isn’t it that of the Almighty?
Jesus mentions (Mk. 4:26-28) of a sower who sows seed and sleeps. The plant grows from the seed and he knows not how. Yet, it does. So also there are many phenomena in the universe for which man has no logical answer. Take the simple rain clouds. I always wonder, they are full of water, yet they float in the sky…how? Then again, the whole quantity of water in a cloud does not fall at once! Science may explain a few things yet something tells you there is a power holding the clouds and its water. Could that power be God? It should be. What about snow? It is said each snowflake is different from the other; an exposition of God’s creative power. I could go on and on. But you get the flow don’t you?
Today’s verse reminds us that we know not many things incl. the way God works. I think of how the Word of God is clear about His purposes being achieved like: All men coming to know God; and I wonder how. And it is here that today’s verse comes like a breath of fresh air bringing in an amazing assurance, when it says: ‘so you know not the work of God, which He is accomplishing in the universe.’ Amazing, despite all the chaos we see, God is orchestrating the perfect world even now and we know not how!

Today's verse: Song of Songs 5:10. My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
When you look at the person of Jesus Christ, the above statement will sure escape your lips for in beholding the Lord, you realize He is someone extra-ordinary. We may not know how He looks but we do know He is radiant. On Mount Tabor, Peter, James and John were dumbfounded when they saw the transfiguration of the Lord into but a fraction of the glory that He possesses. Marvelous is the stature of the Lord.
Then we come to His compassion. When the thief by His side prayed to be remembered, the Lord told him, ‘Today you will be with Me in Paradise.’ Then again, how can one describe a heart, which on its death throes forgives His killers? Such compassion reigned in the heart of the Lord that He never failed to satisfy the least of the souls that approached Him. In Him was hope supreme. The greatest sinner could approach Him with confidence and expect remission from his sin. There was no one who did not feel drawn by his compassion and mercy.
As to His love, what can I say? No matter what I do, it would be grossly inadequate. His love is so great that He chose to die for us rather than see us separated from Him. He purposed a room for each one of us in His Father’s mansion. Such is our Lord and see, despite His awesomeness, He comes to us in humility, saying: ‘Behold I stand at your door and knock…’ He yearns for us to open the door so that He could come in and sup with us. Which is why I will say, He is the chiefest among all.

Today's verse: Jdgs. 10:16. … and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Be amazed today for we learn that God grieved over the misery of Israel. What an amazing God we have. Unlike any other. He’s gentle, loving, merciful, kind and patient and more. And it’s such a privilege to worship Him. How great a privilege it is, we may never know however, it is certainly a great thing that we are given the opportunity to be with Him and worship Him and live as His children.
Why do I say this? Because, a few verses before today’s verse, tell about the Israelites sinning grievously against God. They hurt Him bad in worshipping idols, which in my opinion is the worst thing we can do to Him. See, we know He is the only God and to Him belongs heaven and earth. Even if we were to use our limited wisdom and delve into the knowledge we have, we will realize He is the only God for in Him alone, do we discover attributes that define divinity. Jesus maintained a dignity when He walked the earth that none could tarnish or replicate, unlike other so called gods who indulge in all kinds of frolic. He could at His command work any miracle at any time, yet, He never did it to prove His power before anybody. Most of all His message of love is like no other. As they say, His love can even transform a stone!
Because the Israelites disobeyed and hurt Him, He allowed the Ammonites and the Philistines to dominate and plunder them. But when they turned back and cast away the idols, His soul was in grief for their misery! God, when I read this, I really do not know what to say. I am sure that though He allowed them to suffer, He must have suffered with them too. He was extremely saddened for them who had literally sold Him off! Even when we see Jesus on the cross, we can see the extent and wonder of God’s love. That’s why when you think of it, you’ll agree our God is amazing. Why Lord, why?

Today's verse: Jn. 15:3. Now ye are clean through the word, which I have spoken unto you. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
In the Bible I often read God calling me holy. Makes me wonder, why does God call me holy; because from what I understand of the word ‘holy’, I am nowhere near it. Rather, far from it. Yet I see God calling me holy and so the question, ‘why?’
The verse above provides in a small way the clue. I often tell myself, ‘God is holy.’ He Himself has said it so many times…Lev. 11:44, 45, Lev. 19:2, Jos. 24:19, 1Sam. 6:20, Ps. 78:41, Ps. 99:5,9, Is. 29:23, Hos. 11:9, …Therefore, He desires that I be holy too. Jesus says the same in Mt. 5:48. Now, to commune with God we need to be holy (that is be separated and clean) else, there can be no communion with God because one, God cannot look at us in our sinful state and two, our minds will stray and not concentrate on Him. He communes with us only when we are singularly focused and seek Him from our hearts. He is with us when we are HOLY.
Now the Word of God is Jesus Himself and in His Word he dwells and through His blood we become pure. This purity imparted by Him is enough for us to stand before God and worship Jesus because God sees not our sin in this case but the love of His Son. God can never forget the immense sacrifice of His Son. Now, we who believe in His Word and carry it with us are by our belief cleansed. Therefore, we can in confidence stand before the throne and call Him, ‘Abba, Father!’ This right is ours, given to us by our Lord and Master Jesus Christ.
That is why we know that what Jesus spoke when He called us clean in the above verse is true and applicable to our lives because He has erased all our sins by His blood and because we believe.

Today's verse: Philip. 4:12. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
There is an amazing thing that happens with the one who is an ardent disciple of Jesus Christ. An inner steely resolve sets in which can surpass the greatest storm or the biggest calamity. St. Paul was one such person. If you read this chapter in Philippians, you’ll instantly note it and it is amply reflected in the verse above on which we are to dwell. Question yourself. Would you be able to say the same thing Paul says? You may say, ‘why should I be hungry?’ or ‘why suffer need?’ But there is a way of God we need to understand.
While I fully believe that the servant of God never lacks and also that God gives when one asks; take heed, there are times God sets a drought in our lives. A drought of finance or health or happiness, or peace in the family and whatever else might enter your mind. Also at this time, you may experience inner strife being unable to cope. What then will you do? Perhaps, you will reach out to the throne of the Almighty and ask, ‘why?’ and if you have that kind of relationship with God, which in a way, allows you to ask such a question, then you will hear God telling you, ‘Trust that I am with you.’
It is by trust in God alone that you can echo Paul’s statement. For God alone can work wonders in our lives. God alone can see the oasis in the desert, while you can see sand. God can look at the star, beyond your dense clouds. My friend, ‘being hungry’, ‘being in need’ are different states of being. They pass. Our focus has to be on God who never will pass. He is eternal and His power can turn anything around. In any situation of difficulty, let the fullness of God dwell in you and let your confidence in Him soar. Let the color of His ampleness be applied across your mind so that even in penury you will see plenty. Above all, hope in Him for surely, He will guide your boat amidst troubled waters.

Today's verse: Lk 9:62. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Nothing can be truer than the above when it concerns a decision with one’s desire to do God’s work. For when you decide to work for God, you will invariably find that a number of obstacles and necessities of the world arise from nowhere. These obstacles have only one purpose: to make you look behind and linger in your current world for just a little longer even as you think you will then follow the Lord. And countless number of times we have seen that it just doesn’t happen i.e. the person never gets into serving the Lord.
This is the principle of the evil one at work. As soon as the desire of working for the Lord comes, he puts the thought of your being much needed in the things of the world; so much so that you feel that, without your being there, the whole thing you are involved with, will come crashing down. You then get involved in the immediate need of the situation thinking it is for the last time. But, before long you become so involved that you are not able to let go. That’s what Jesus meant when He said, ‘if you look back, you aren’t fit for His Kingdom.’ In other words, you were never really interested in working for Him.
The decision to work for God has to be instantaneous and permanent. It is not a matter of feeling, like you do, to eat an apple, etc. If you discover you are not able to find time to pray or fast or do His work, reflect. Did you decide to do it or were you casual about it? You will see that you had not made a conscious decision to go ahead. Now look at what the Bible says about Levi, the tax collector (Lk. 5:27,28). Levi was a man of the world. Yet, the moment Jesus called him, it says, he left all, rose up and followed Him. And that is how he became a great apostle of Jesus. Today, as you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to help you decide to work for Jesus and also help you in keeping that decision.

Today's verse: Eph. 1:4. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
When I read this verse, I am a bit scared because of what it says…He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world that we be holy and without blame before Him in love. The question I ask myself is, ‘Am I holy?’
And I know the answer, which is what scares me. Maybe I can make a feeble attempt before Him by saying, ‘But Lord, am I not very concerned about my continuous sinning and aren’t the times many, when I have come near Your throne crying to you to make me holy and pure like You?’ But can I honestly say that ‘Yes Lord, I tried and I failed.’ I am pretty sure I can’t. That is the story of most of us isn’t it?
One thing I am quite happy about in the verse is that we were chosen before the foundation of the world. What a powerful statement: That God in His mercy considered us even before He created the world to be with Him and enjoy His bliss in eternity. It’s enough to light up my soul and make me wave the banners of heaven. And yes, also to sit down and think, if He wants me to be holy, then I must make all efforts in that direction. Surely, He will send His Grace, which will enable me to be perfect in love, just as He, my heavenly Father is.

Thoughts for another day

Today's verse: Nahum 1:2. the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
If we ever think that, the atrocities committed against the people of God will be condoned by Him, then it is erroneous thinking as today’s verse infers to us that God will take revenge against His enemies. How do these wicked people who are our enemies become God’s enemies? Because, God is personally involved with the people who are His own. How do we become His own? By living and communing with Him.
God watches over us and his eyes roam around the whole earth to encourage those who are devoted to Him. He is very concerned about the body of His Son Jesus. In fact, when Paul persecutes the Christians, Jesus asks him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ not ‘My people.’ So much is the Lord involved with us that He deems us one with Himself. The Father has always sought this and the Son in John also prays that we all be one. Amen, how blessed and beautiful is the Lord who wants us to be joined as one inspite of the sins we commit.
And then we see how God will come to our aid when tormented by the enemy. There is no doubt about it. We have taken the verse a little out of context in that, when God utters it through Nahum, He talks of all those as enemies who have disobeyed Him but we can extend this to mean that those of us who are loyal to Him and remain in His love are also His people and He will avenge our persecutors.
