Today's verse: Lam. 3:40. Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
The most wonderful words a repentant Christian can utter are the ones that form today’s verse. There is much satisfaction in heaven when these words are uttered by us humans, and even greater satisfaction when we abide by them.
This life we enter into from the time we are born, gradually presents us the ornaments of the evil one. They look beautiful and we are seduced; tip to toe. We start living horrendous lives, which of course to the world are, but ways of proving you are human. We wear the mantle of banality and immorality and get sucked into this quagmire more and more. Eventually the quagmire saps us bad, draining our very lives.
As the tide then changes with the repercussions of our sins fast catching up with us, many of us sink in the quagmire, and some even curse God for their situations. Of course God had nothing to do with it, rather His Spirit always gently utters the soft words of what is right in our ears but we quickly shut Him off. But happy those who midst their afflictions realize they have Someone to go to who can heal them and their situations. They rise up and utter the words of the verse and then God heals.
Turning again to the Lord is a thing of great joy unto Heaven and let me tell you, no matter what, God is always willing to listen to a repentant heart. Shut the sinful past and walk in the future with God. You will find rest for your soul.
Have you felt the whiff of cool air as it brings in much needed showers on a hot summer afternoon? Have you tasted a small bit of bread after hours and days of not having had anything? Have you experienced the satisfaction of an intense need being met? My friend, Jesus Christ can give you this satisfaction and much more. Now is the time to bring Him into your life. Just say, 'Lord Jesus, I believe in you. Come into my life right now. Heal my sin. Heal everything.'

Today's verse: Jonah 1:3. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD… (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
You might recall this reflection yesterday wherein we had read that there is a purpose God has for us. Now, if you read the book of Jonah, you realize that God had a purpose for him too. It is intriguing how this book in the face of acute Jewish indulgence finds mention in the Bible. Intriguing because, God calls Jonah to preach repentance to the people of Nineveh who were the archenemies of Israel. Yet it can be viewed as an example for the Jews to follow when they learn about how the Ninevites repented and received pardon from God.
Coming to the above verse, we find Jonah running away from the appointed task in the opposite direction and we see later how God brings him back to fulfill the purpose to go and complete the mission. This book is indeed very interesting; giving us fodder for reflection on God’s work in various situations and making us understand the quality of His mercy for man. While I would love to go on about this book for the sheer beauty of our Father’s deep compassion for every human being, our purpose is to look at the verse we have been given today which in itself tells us that our grappling with God should not be to cross-purposes.
It is delightful to be chosen by Him to accomplish His tasks. Running away from it will only ensure that much misery will come your way. Let me tell you, if you have received some calling from Him and you are trying to shirk it or thinking you are not up to it, then remember God will be displeased. If you feel you are not up to it, remember, He is the One who will accomplish it. He doesn’t need your sufficiency He, is enough. My friend, accept the calling of God in your life with great joy. For the purposes of God are eternal and effuse with love. Through you He can save those who are in the throes of hell-fire. Fulfill His purposes and you can rest assured that your reward in heaven will be great.

Today's verse: Rev. 2:4. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
If your are reading this today, then let me tell you, there is a purpose God has called you for; that purpose is outlined in the Bible: To be messengers for His Gospel to those living in darkness. Even as I write, I find the verse above being spoken to me; it is so striking and true. So very real. God today, gently reminds both me and you, that our lives have taken paths away from the halo of His Grace, like the rivulet that strays from the desired purpose of the river and feeds into oblivion.
Remember my friend, when we first encountered God, how excited we were. The zeal we were filled with! We were ready to do anything for Him. We considered our lives so meaningful in the service of the Lord. Really, the warmth of His love spread like a cloak as we basked in the peace that came forth. But, it quickly faded away! The torrents of evil spewed by the world, engulfed us because of the dirt we harbor in our hearts. Today, where is the warmth? Where is the zeal we were gushing with? Where is our first Love: God Almighty, most loving and most gracious, in our lives? Oh, my soul, how temporal is my affiliation to my Maker?
But fret not, for God is close to you. Make Him the Anchor in your heart. The riddles of life, no matter what they be, can be solved by Him. Our problems are mere wisps of smoke when placed under His tent. Rise my soul and in repentance move to the shade of His canopy. He will not thrust you away. Rather like the father of the prodigal son, He will clasp us in His embrace and clothe us in a new robe, putting a ring on our fingers saying, welcome My child, to your eternal dwelling.

Today's verse: Ps. 78:39. For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
In my last reflective, we looked at examining ourselves. I’d like us to dwell on it again: our relationship with God and who we take Him to be. The atrocities we commit against Him, both knowingly and unknowingly. It is surprising how far we are to Him, even when we claim to be close. It’s amazing that we don’t even know how to approach Him. We the so-called ‘children of God’ have hardly any meaningful relationship with Him and quite honestly, we would that God stay away from us. I am not saying that it is the case with most of you, but with the majority of us.
The reason why we fail to have a relationship with our Father is because of our sin and our constant acts of demeaning and belittling Him. Now this happens even with those reading this, or other reflections or for that matter the Bible itself. The irony is that we may know to coin the strongest terms in our prayers and know the Bible inside out; but knowledge of God escapes us.
John says in His Gospel (1:4,5), ‘In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.’ The darkness in our hearts birthed and sustained by the evil one. In fact so strong is the factor of enmity toward God that Jesus exclaims, ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not want it! Mt. 23:37.
Yet, there is hope we find given in today’s verse. No matter how deep we are in sin, how far we have gone, there is a God who loves us and there never is a position we can take which puts us beyond the scope of His mercy. It is only He who can and will rescue us. Because He knows us as flesh that does not last, therefore, He Himself comes and restores us with overflowing love. That is how good our God is.

Today's verse: Pro. 3:5. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
If we examine our lives, apart from the evil that we commit and the sins that accrue as an act of omission, there is yet I feel, a greater one, which is, putting our trust in our own abilities in our journey in life and not leaning on God.
The Lord created us with great love and He wants to maintain and keep us with the same great love. Yet, over a period of time, our hearts veer away from Him. Truly, if you think about it, it is an insult to the Lord that we move away from Him. My friend, God does not eschew His responsibilities as we do. So therefore, keeping us, which is His responsibility by virtue of being our Creator, is taken very seriously by Him and He never shirks this responsibility. Yes, He hands us trials and tribulations but those are meant to just move us away from the path we take towards self-harm and destruction. Nudging us as it were to push us back on track.
God my friend is the Master of a world (we call it the Kingdom of God) where, there is joy, peace and happiness. There is an innocence permeating every molecule of its atmosphere and the air is one of expectation. Dependence is solely on God. Over here, just as we depend solely on Him for the rains, there we depend on Him for every thing, small or big. There is no question of, ‘is this too small for God to be interested in it?’ for God is interested in everything! Nay rather, He is pleased to be involved in everything.
The entry to this place is ‘child-likeness’ with a trusting that is seamless and sincere. And its light is God Almighty. His Holiness shines forth in the place as would light shine through a prism, with a cascading of brilliance that births pleasure in our senses. In this place, Jesus our Lord has prepared a room for us. Welcome. But please remove your shoes of doubt and your skins of hate and dine at the Master’s table. This is your eternal home.

Today's verse: Amos 4:13 For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
When you think of all the problems you go through and the difficulties you face in life, your mind is overwhelmed by the magnitude of your adverse situation. Questions arise about the reason and purpose for the creation of man, frail man, subject to the whims and fury of nature. You know, a few days ago I was reflecting on the same and when I looked at the mango tree outside my window, I said to myself, ‘look at that tree, unless somebody cuts it, it will easily outlast me!’ We humans who are endowed with such intelligence are so frail if you really look at it, won’t you agree?
But, I want to tell you something. We, the disciples of Jesus, follow a God who makes the statement in today’s verse. He is all-powerful and mighty. He holds the winds in His hands and threads together the clouds bulging with billions of molecules of water, yet not too heavy to fall down! He declares His Word and it comes to be. Jesus, said, ‘PEACE. BE STILL’ and the mighty sea became quiet, lashed as it were by a mere Word. And my friend, holy one of God, Jesus Himself has given you the privilege of becoming Sons of God…Children of the Most High. A privilege worth far more than we can even think or imagine. By which we can partake of this awesome power of the Mighty One.
What then, should I be afraid of? What then, should clog my way or seem to be to be so big that I cannot see beyond. Well, I need to look up to Him. David said, I look up to the hills from whence my help comes. For in looking up, I move to bring down the gaze of the Almighty from the top which is able to crush the block in my path and still the storm round my feet. Trust Him my beloved, He will deliver. I am speaking to someone today who is completely overwhelmed by the problem you’ve encountered. Peace, I declare unto you, the peace of Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. You need nothing else even as you are released from the throes of misery. Only He has done it. Give Him alone all the glory.

Today's verse: Amos 5:4 … Seek ye me, and ye shall live: (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
Life and death is in the hands of God and He alone can exercise this discretion. Many times in the Bible we see what God does with this property. Lazarus was dead. They had sought the Lord when he was alive but the Lord arrived after he died and was laid in the tomb, four days later. In the conversation between Jesus and Martha, Jn. 11:21-27, Martha is not seeking the Lord for life but adheres to her belief in the resurrection of the dead till Jesus tells her, ‘I AM the resurrection and the life.’
When Isaiah informs king Hezekiah that he will die (2 Kgs. 20:1 ff), he immediately turned his face towards God and sought Him. God granted him 15 more years of life. See, the power of life and death is in His hand. Never forget this. Even as I write, a colleague’s little daughter is on the threshold of death. But we have sought the Lord and truly the Lord will deliver, for he can quicken the senses of man even when the breath has ceased and the internal organs are damaged beyond repair – for God is the God of the impossible. He doesn’t know what ‘impossible’ means!
Seek Him my friend, whoever you are and wherever you are. He neither forsakes you nor turns His face from you. Because He loves you far too much to let any of your misdoings affect His Sovereign Parenthood. You have never treaded the boundaries of what you may call acceptability to God for He sets no boundaries. All He wants is that you come back. He it is who is telling you to seek Him for He knows that without Him you are dead. What does it take to seek Him? Nothing much except turning your face to Him and welcoming Him in your heart. Do it today, so you might live.

Today's verse: Job 23:3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
The book of Job in the Bible is a book of many questions, among which is the above. We know that Job was a man righteous before God (job1:1) and that suddenly he was reduced to a state of utter despair. Despite this, Job did not malign God. Neither did He question God why? Rather, when his wife prompted him to curse God and die, he made that profound statement that should pull at our hearts, ‘we accept good things from God, should we then not accept evil?’ (Job 2:10).
When Job’s friends came to console him, they heaped various allegations on him saying, somehow, he must have sinned. Job vehemently tried to defend his position in which the language he uses, gradually shifts from despair to hope tinged with a hint of arrogance in his own sincerity to Godly obligations. What touches us in the above is his knowledge of the mercy of God. Job was not a Hebrew. He came from the land of Uz, which had no influence of the God of Abraham. Yet, we find here in Job, a profound knowledge of God’s ways and understanding. In fact of all the people on the earth, it is astounding that God chooses Job to demonstrate how men faithful to God, endure bad situations and do not blame God or revile Him.
The above verse spells the anxiety of Job’s life wherein he despairingly hopes He knew where he could find God and his seat, which we know as the Mercy Seat (Ex. 25:17). What’s amazing is Job’s fidelity despite not knowing Yahweh God. Besides, he was also aware of God’s mercy and his need for it. Now we are mostly Christian and we know God. We have also understood His mercy and experienced it in our own lives. How then do we act in a pressure kind of situation, do we seek to know how to find our God? Do we seek to arrive at His Mercy Seat? Or…? How does it go in our lives?
Take some time off today and answer the above question. Joy will surely fill your heart when He speaks to you in a still voice and reassures you.

Today's verse: 1 Samuel 26:12. …for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
When we are told to do things according to what the Lord wills for us, we often shy away from them and do not do them. The main reason, however much we may deny, is we do not trust God enough. Let’s say that if the Lord were to ask us to stay at home to take care of our old mother and we are in the midst of a busy period, would we ever pause to think and say, okay, maybe the Lord has something in store which is why He needs me to stay back. Rather our conversation with Him might be, ‘Lord You know how much work I have. And You know how my boss is - always behind me wanting me removed from my position, etc. etc. So Lord, please allow me to go to work. As for my mother, Lord You are there to look after her, no?’
While the reasoning given by us is worthy and right according to human wisdom before God, it seems rather odd. Why, you might ask. Because, the Lord, might say to Himself, ‘see this foolish child worried about her job. Can’t I remove all those obstacles that come her way in her work; Me Who Am all powerful and to Whom nothing is impossible? Perhaps He would have wanted you to share your love with your mother and create moments of great worth to be cherished by you for a long time. However, our human reasoning come in the way.
But look at David; he trusted God completely and wanted to behold His face all the time. Which is why God worked marvelously in his life. Reflect on the above verse …a deep sleep from the Lord…so that David could shame Saul who was pursuing him to kill him. Never was the moment when God did not listen to David’s prayer except of course when David sinned. God saw in David the deep desire to commune with Him and despite odds, always trusting Him. That my friend, moves Gods heart like nothing else. Do the same, you’ll write paeans about the Love of God.

Thoughts for another day

Today's verse: Ps. 36:5. Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. (NIV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
In a group we were reading this verse yesterday when suddenly the Spirit of the Lord, opened my eyes to the wisdom that God had put in David’s heart when using him for writing the Psalm.
Jesus, when leaving the earth, said, Behold I am with you always even till the end of the world. And the Word of God in Ezek. 37:27 says, ‘My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ Isn’t it amazing that God the greatest Splendor anywhere chooses to dwell with warped and dirty human beings!
So God dwells with us on earth and being here, the effusion of His love reaches the highest levels there could be. His faithfulness too, starts with us and reaches unto the skies. Isn’t it marvelous to learn that God really really dwells with us and that’s where it all is?
My dear friend, God is so much with us. We need to just open the windows of our hearts to His awesome presence. The Word of God also says, that we are the Temple of the Holy Ghost. How true it is. Our hearts are the inner sanctum of God’s dwelling. Nothing less. The blood of Jesus has made it possible and we who believe in Him have much to rejoice because He it is who has made His abode with you and me. What a privilege. When you take a moment off from your busy life and think about it, it should hit you hard enough and like Mary, you will say, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord.’
