Thoughts for another day

June 25, 2007

Today's verse: Ps. 78:39. For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)

In my last reflective, we looked at examining ourselves. I’d like us to dwell on it again: our relationship with God and who we take Him to be. The atrocities we commit against Him, both knowingly and unknowingly. It is surprising how far we are to Him, even when we claim to be close. It’s amazing that we don’t even know how to approach Him. We the so-called ‘children of God’ have hardly any meaningful relationship with Him and quite honestly, we would that God stay away from us. I am not saying that it is the case with most of you, but with the majority of us.

The reason why we fail to have a relationship with our Father is because of our sin and our constant acts of demeaning and belittling Him. Now this happens even with those reading this, or other reflections or for that matter the Bible itself. The irony is that we may know to coin the strongest terms in our prayers and know the Bible inside out; but knowledge of God escapes us.

John says in His Gospel (1:4,5), ‘In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.’ The darkness in our hearts birthed and sustained by the evil one. In fact so strong is the factor of enmity toward God that Jesus exclaims, ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not want it! Mt. 23:37.

Yet, there is hope we find given in today’s verse. No matter how deep we are in sin, how far we have gone, there is a God who loves us and there never is a position we can take which puts us beyond the scope of His mercy. It is only He who can and will rescue us. Because He knows us as flesh that does not last, therefore, He Himself comes and restores us with overflowing love. That is how good our God is.
