Thoughts for another day

Aug. 7, 2009

Today's verse: Amos 9:6. It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)

To draw the dimensions of the greatness and massiveness of God is difficult. If I were to imagine some picture of Him, say Him treading the circle of the earth, then comes along another picture, like Him keeping His foot on the earth as it is His footstool, then comes another and another and another and you finally tell Him, ‘Lord, how can I, a finite being define Your infiniteness’. I can understand the predicament of the people in Jesus’ time when He made the sick well, and then He healed the lame, the crippled, and opened the eyes of even him who was born blind. Then suddenly as they lamented Jairus’ daughter’s death, He comes and raises her. I can imagine the plight of those who were with Him when He raised the son of the widow of Nain or even Lazarus.

His followers were also shocked when He stilled the storm saying, ‘Be Quiet!’ just like that. Of course Jesus was but a man, yet he did all these things. How much more will He do now when He’s ascended and reigning at the right hand of the Father? And it brings me back to the ‘Amazing Power of God’. Really amazing no? Just think of something and it is there or it happens. What amazing power. God is so powerful. Our verse today, consolidates the impression of His power in my mind and I can see how He strides both Heaven and earth and commands the waters of the sea to pour them out on the surface of the earth as rain! Anything and everything is within His control, even stopping the earth in its tracks without it being able to either rotate or revolve!

The previous and following verses, give us an impression of God’s wrath and His power. We’re all subject to His wrath because we’ve sinned. But there comes His Son Jesus and takes away our sins leaving us sinless and pure; then we are His inheritance and we will be His children unto eternity; to be with Him, love Him and worship Him.
