Thoughts for another day

September 21, 2006

Today's verse: John 7:38. as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (KJV)

You might have heard something called ‘Living Water’. It is connected with our God. For only our God is the source of it, and as you know, water is the elixir of life which simply means water sustains life. In today’s verse, Jesus says it with reference to our beloved Holy Spirit.

When we believe in Jesus Christ who is the reflection of the Father or as Hebrews says, the brightness of His glory, and the express image of his person, then we have the promise of Living Water flowing out of us. For Jesus grants us His Spirit. Didn’t He say, ‘I will send Him to you’ (Jn. 16:7). And when the Spirit is there, He wells out of the depth of your being; the very core of your life.

When the Holy Spirit comes, all things change. The essence of life changes in its basic structure. The darkness within us transforms into light. Meanness and incisiveness, morphs into acceptance. Revenge turns into blessing. Pride goes somewhere to hide and tolerance for the other becomes the order of the day. Defeat becomes a sign of victory and the smog of gloom disperses to allow the ‘healing rays of the Son’ penetrate into us. All this happens in the same circumstances and to the same person, in varying degrees of course. But surely as you live, it happens.

My friend, God wants that the Holy Spirit abide with us. Jesus died that you may draw ‘water out of the wells of salvation’. That you may, lead a life of power. That you may, conquer and not be conquered. That you may capture His joy in your heart and go about in the world seeking to give it to others. His assurance of this is enough for me to go to bed each night ready to face the toughest stumble in the morning for I know that ‘Rivers of Living Water’ flow within me, making me invincible. And I know, ‘God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD YAHVEH is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation.’ Amen.
