Thoughts for another day

September 25, 2006

Today's verse: Amos 5:4. For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live. (KJV)

Deep inside of man, there is an unfulfilled desire and a search for something he knows not what. I have seen many people looking and trying to find their ways towards that elusive happiness?! Yet they never find it. The real tragedy isn’t in not finding it but, ‘not knowing what it is or where it is’.

God who created this beautiful world and who knows every grain of sand, every leaf that is seen and every creature that lives, should certainly know what that elusive thing is. Because, most certainly He who created our deep inner beings must know what it longs for. The yearnings of the heart must be shown the path of fulfillment and God alone can show this. Men of their own accord cannot discern the depths of the heart. They have tried and tried but they cannot explain what is necessary for fulfillment in life or what can lead to abundant life. Man is grossly inadequate to chart a map towards fulfillment in life.

Rightly has St Ignatius, one of the fathers of the Christian church, in his ‘Spiritual Exercises’ mentioned, ‘our hearts were made for You Lord, and they’ll never find their rest, except in You. That’s exactly what the Lord is suggesting in today’s verse…’Seek me and live.’ For He knows none can satisfy. Beloved, you and I have been formed in His Image. Our souls reflect His persona. The deep longing that man has is manifested in the soul and because of our sinful ways, it loses it’s connection with the sap that it requires to be fulfilled. Sap, which emanates from God alone. Our pursuit of other things than God can only end in frustration and disaster. Today, if you are feeling empty and unfulfilled and don’t know what to do, seek Jesus. And truly, I tell you, you will live.
