Thoughts for another day
Sept. 2, 2011
Today's verse: Ps. 46:10. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)
There's something about stillness that's simply awesome and powerful in God's sight. Here in our Scripture today, God commands us to be still and know that He is God. But before we get on to this, I want to ask a question, have you tried to be still? Try it and you'll realize it's the most difficult thing to do. I tried it and I could only be still for a few seconds. The stillness God is speaking about is not sitting in any trance like pose without making any sound or uttering some man-made sounds, etc. but being still in the mind without a single idea or thought going through it; yeah, stillness in which only the Spirit of God has room and nothing else.
If ever you're able to be still, you'll come to realize God's awesomeness. You'll behold His greatness, His grandeur and His loveliness; you'll know…yes, know that He is God and there can be no other like Him. Then like David you'll say, 'I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.' In this stillness you'll also discover the truth in what Isaiah says, 'in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength' 30:15b. Sometimes in that stillness you'll experience power, power as that of a tsunami or a nuclear reaction, the very power which Moses felt when he could still himself in the face of the marauding Egyptians who were chasing down the Israelites. He also asked them to be still saying, 'The LORD will fight for you, you only need be still.' In that moment of power egged on by God Almighty, he raised his staff and parted the Red Sea!
Our human limitations and circumstances don't allow us to be still, for anxiety and worry plague the mind, making it restless, and this restlessness eventually kills. On the other hand when you submit to be still and meld into God, slowly the tensions disappear; fear melts and God comes in. In this state where God is exalted in you and for you in the whole earth as you lift your hands high in surrender, His power hits you; enough power to see you through the rough edges of life.
