Thoughts for another day

Today's verse: Hab. 3:17-19. Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. (KJV)

Sometimes I look at the Bible and see the men and women in it who kept faith in God; I marvel at the kind of faith they possessed and am inspired by them to also keep the same faith because we worship the same God. Our Scripture today, prods me to look at the Words uttered by Habbakuk, a prophet of God, deeply. What an amazing ode to confidence in the Awesome One. Imagine him saying, though there’ll be no fruit and the labor shall be in vain, yet he’ll rejoice in the LORD. I wonder how such confidence comes into a man. It can only be by the Holy Spirit. Isn’t it amazing to say: ‘in the midst of despair my confidence in God shall not wane even a little bit.’
I often tell people who claim to have faith in God to check that faith. Oodles of unchecked faith, is no faith at all and there’s no point in talking of faith when it’s not tested in the treadmill of trial. But when it’s tested and clears the test then that faith can be an inspiration to others’ faith. It can spur the human being to believe in God as nothing else can. In reading the account of Abraham, who obeying God, goes to sacrifice Isaac as God needed him to, I can scarcely hide my joy in my own faith in God, for I’ve come to know that God, though He tests, also provides Grace and great restitution after the test. Then He imprints on us – ‘passed’ – which stands us in good stead through our lives. Remember, what He did many years ago, He can do even now and in the future. We need but trust.
Truly with this faith implanted by His Spirit in us, we too like Habbakuk shall find delight in any autumn of our lives and live through it to give Him glory. Amen.
