Thoughts for another day

January 16, 2009.

Today's verse: Jer. 10:23. O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (KJV)
(Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)

There are many greats who walked the face of the earth; some we still remember and perhaps pay tribute to even today. Most great men understood one thing: Though they may be in eminent positions, they control nothing. They realised that though the reigns of power are in their hand, they can do nothing to rein in the greater things on earth like controlling the movement of the sun and the stars or give life anew. They realised they couldn’t create anything but only destroy what was there and that too they couldn’t restore if they wished.

Today’s verse is the total sum of the status of man before God. God is sovereign and supreme. He rules the world and all in it. For a while the devil can kid himself thinking all belongs to him as he did even at the time of Jesus, when He tempted our Lord saying that if He fell at his feet and worshiped him, he would give Him all He saw! Make no mistake my friend, God controls everything. I remember a toy I was fond of when young. Formed of transparent plastic with about 6 steel balls spread all over, you had to bring them together in a circle at the center. While you play the game, the steel balls may behave erratically thinking they have the power to move wherever they want but eventually, they had to obey you and go to the center. So it is with God and us. Only, God is a lot more powerful than we can think and imagine and more merciful than ever we may need of His mercy.

It is best we fall on God to direct our ways. The vagaries of life demand that we lean on Him so that we don’t falter and I assure you that some day, you will say like David, ‘He lifted me up from the miry clay and set my feet on solid ground.’
