Thoughts for another day

April 29, 2008

Today's verse: Lk. 11:13. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him. (KJV) (Pls. read the above before you read further. Thanks)

There is a story I heard about a king in the erstwhile kingdom of Saudamini in Central India. He loved his son a lot and this boy grew up to be a fine young person. But the king’s younger brother, poisoned the mind of the youth to usurp the throne from his father. When the king learned about it, he had the boy summarily executed, even though he was his only son!

Jesus says, worldly parents being evil know how to give good gifts to their children – which the king gave to his son as he grew up. Yet the moment, the son seemed threatening; the father did away with him. Such is human nature. Maybe not so with you or with your people, but very much prevalent in the world. When it comes to God, you know, for our sake, God gave His own Son that we may become one with Him. God’s selflessness is exemplary in that, although God sacrificed His beloved Son, He never asked such a sacrifice of us nor as was in the case of Abraham, has He asked to go ahead with the sacrifice.

God is always willing to give of Him to us. He is there for us in good and in bad, even when we are in top form or down in the dumps. And He is ready to answer our every prayer. Jesus qualifies this in what He says of His Father when He says how much more will your heavenly Father give of His Spirit if we but ask. Jesus knows that to live a victorious life, we need His Spirit and He is willing for us sake to fill us with His Holy Spirit that we live full lives. What more then can He give us?
